Warcraft: The Beginning officially releases in the United States tomorrow, though many movie goers will be attending showings this evening. The film has already seen success in Europe and China breaking box office records, which you can read more on here. A graphic novel prequel to the film was recently released on June 7th, called The Origins of Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood. The comic sets the foundation of the friendships between Llane, Lothar and Medivh.
The novel, written by Paul Cornell and Chris Metzen, sets the stage many years previous to the events depicted in Warcraft: The Beginning. The novel’s official description states, “the young and headstrong Llane, Lothar and Medivh embark on a mission of vengeance that will forge them into heroes…the kind of heroes Azeroth will need in its darkest hour.” In an interview with Bleeding Cool, James Waugh Director of Story and Creative Development stated that the novel begins with Medivh taking an interest in Fel magic, which connects to what fans will see in the Warcraft film. Waugh also mentions, “the importance of making the lore accessible to people coming to Warcraft for the first time.”
Battle is very much at home in Warcraft, and Bonds of Brotherhood is no different as it tells of the conflict between humans and trolls. The graphic novel features art by Mat Broome, Michael O’Hare, Eddie Nunez, Roy Allan Martinez, Ale Garza and Mike Bowden to compliment the story. Origins of Warcraft, sets itself up to be something enjoyable for longtime fans to sink their teeth into, and for new fans to get a taste of the lore that the Warcraft universe has to offer.
