Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire PlayStation 4 review: adventure with a slight pause

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire gets ported to the PS4.

Although we’ve got Baldur’s Gate 3 to look forward to, it’s not the only name in adventure games at the moment. Obsidian Entertainment did quite a thing with the original Pillars of Eternity, turning heads with an old-school adventure that we haven’t seen the likes of in years. And now it continues that saga with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, which finally made its way to consoles a little while ago. And despite a few minor technical comebacks (you’ll be waiting at times for the game to get started), adventurers will find this is well worth delving into.

The sequel follows the Watcher, the character from the main game, as he completes his journey and eventually finds himself in another given situation where he must use his communication and combat skills to the fullest. We won’t delve too deep into the story here, as there’s a robust amount of it to discover. But if you’re a fan of the original Pillars, you’re going to be right at home here.

Deadfire will keep gamers engaged for hours.

One thing players will notice right off the bat is how much more evolved the world is in Deadfire. It’s a fantastic place to explore and discover new entities, both good and bad, as the Watcher continues on his journey. You’ll love each new place you discover and find – through some amazing writing no less – that there’s a lot to take in here. Obsidian certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to making a role-playing game that really sucks you in – and the timing is perfect given the current quarantine situation with the Coronavirus.

In addition, it’s fun to see how your character changes over the course of Pillars through your choices. You’ll need to make some rough ones, dependent on what you’re really needing within this world. But the way they unfold is graceful, and you really feel the impact of what you decide.

The options with the battle system are tremendous.

Player choice and ample difficulty will boost the replayability value for Deadfire.

What’s more, you can also decide how the game plays. The traditional turn-based style of Pillars is back, but you can also go for a real-time approach if you prefer, though you will need to put up with pauses. Either way, you’ll find it to be wonderfully balanced, with each situation providing a new wrinkle in which the proper choices should be made. Proceed carefully, though—these enemies are not dopes. Fortunately, you can tweak the difficulty to a much easier setting, in case you find yourself in the midst of a struggle. And if you lose, you can always come back for more. Deadfire isn’t a game that’s about to shut you out.

You’ll also discover a ship management system that’s pretty cool, and not overcomplicated. This will allow you to tackle the deadly waters provided within the game, though you’ll need to keep tabs on your soldiers so they won’t drop dead at your feet. It can be a bit much for some, but Pillars veterans should be right at home with what it provides.

That’s an interesting approach to Feng Shui.

Deadfire also looks beautiful on the PS4, along with a killer soundtrack that matches up with it nicely. Again, its world is something to truly look at; and the visual effects really stand out in some of the right places. Alas, you’ll have to put up with a lot of loading time. We’re talking about minute-or-so stints in which it can take a while to get into a new area. Be prepared, because you’ll be waiting a bit.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire picks up right where the first game left off, with compelling storytelling, a splendid combat system and hours’ worth of adventure. You’ll need to face a loading screen quite a bit here, but it’s worth it just to endure what magic Obsidian has bestowed within the sequel. Now, let’s see what Baldur’s Gate 3 can do to top it.
